9 Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water

Hi, Barbizon of Akron! Not too long ago we did a blog post about the benefits of drinking water. Not too long before that, we also did a blog on how lemons can improve your skin health. Well, now we're doing a blog on combining the two to make a knock-out combination that you should make part of your daily routine! The beauty and health benefits of lemon water are incredible! Read below to see just what all it can offer.

Aids in Weight Loss- After eight hours of sleep, drinking lemon water first thing in the morning helps to fight dehydration which can lower your metabolism. Drinking a full glass will also help curb your hunger cravings.

Balances pH in the Body- By drinking water everyday, lemon water helps reduce acidity as it is one of the most alkaline foods known to man! Although it has citric acid and seems really acidic, the acid doesn't metabolize in your system. A high alkaline diet has also been shown to help you lose weight quicker.

Anti-aging Effects- The vitamin C in lemons helps reduce blemishes and wrinkles!

Clears Acne- Lemon water helps to purge toxins from your blood which in turn, helps to keep your skin clear. You can actually apply lemon directly to any scars or discoloration on your skin to reduce appearance.
Just put lemon on your spot at night and wash off in the morning with cool water.

Flushes Your Body- Have constipation, heartburn, or other digestive problems? The juice from lemon water aids in flushing toxic material from your body while also encouraging the liver to produce more bile, which is important for digestion.

Natural Diuretic- Feeling bloated? Lemons increase the rate of urination which helps relieve water weight while helping to keep your urinary tract healthy.

Freshens Breath- That's right! Lemon water helps to keep your breath fresh and clean!

Stress Reliever- Stress often depletes the vitamin C in our bodies. Lemon water helps replenish this essential vitamin.

Immune System Boost- As stated earlier, lemon water is packed with vitamin C which naturally fights colds... But it's also high in potassium which stimulates nerve and brain function and has also been shown to help control blood pressure.

5 Busted Myths about Skin

At Barbizon of Akron, we feel that it is crucial that all of our students have correct information when it comes to their health needs. This is why we've compiled a list of five popular and busted myths about skincare. Read up and let us know how many of these you heard on our Facebook page!

Myth: A product with SPF 30 provides twice as much protection as SPF 15

In reality, SPF 30 provides only about 4 percent more protection than SPF 15. To maximize your sun protection, apply sunscreen generously, reapply often (especially after being in the water) and avoid being in the sun during peak hours.

Myth: Age spots are inevitable as we get older

Age spots actually aren't due to age. Though it's more likely to have age spots at 40 than at 20, age spots are actually caused by years of exposure to UV light. Genetics also contribute to how susceptible a person is to age spots. True age spots are harmless. However, many women choose to lighten them for cosmetic reasons. Always use daily sun protection to help avoid age spots.

Myth: Greasy foods cause acne

Though greasy foods are probably not the healthiest choices, there's no evidence that they cause acne. In fact, dairy products and citrus products are more likely to cause acne breakouts than greasy foods or even chocolate.

Myth: Blackheads are due to dirty skin

Though they are dark in color, blackheads are not dirt and you can't just wash them away. Blackheads are caused when your skin produces too much sebum. Dead skin cells get in the path for the sebum to exit through the pore. This blocks the pore, creating a clog. When the clog nears the surface and oxides, it turns black. Don't try to scrub blackheads away with a regular facial scrub. Instead, find products that contain salicylic acid that exfoliates inside the pore to dissolve away the dead skin cells and oil.

Myth: All women eventually outgrow acne

Unfortunately, this is a circumstance where men have an advantage over women. Men typically outgrow acne because after puberty their hormone levels become steady. However, women have hormone fluctuations throughout their lives — due to menstrual cycles, pregnancy and so on. Women can suffer from acne well into their '20s, '30s, '40s and beyond.

Those are our top five busted myths! We hope that you found this post to be educational and that it will help you feel more confident about your skin and its needs. Shine on, Barbizon of Akron!

Stress Less this Holiday Season!

Hey, Barbizon of Akron! We know the holidays can be tough, but they don't have to be as tough this year! Check out this blog written by on how to stress less during the holidays! These tips are sure to help make it a breeze!

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, do you notice that you’re feeling a little more stressed than usual? If so, you’re not alone since the holidays can be one of the most stressful times of year. Here’s 5 ways to stress less this holiday season!

1. Give Yourself Permission to Say No
Have you already received a handful of invites to holiday parties? As the invites continue to stream in, you may find yourself feeling torn between wanting to please your employer, family, and friends while maintaining a sense of balance during the holiday season. When you give yourself permission to gracefully say no to an invitation, you are actually saying yes to taking care of yourself. If you’re concerned that the person who invited you will be offended if you don’t attend, consider talking about it with someone you can trust before declining the invitation.

2. Release Your Expectation of Perfection
When families gather for the holidays, there’s often an expectation that everything will run smoothly and essentially be “perfect” with delicious food, meaningful conversation, laughter, and unconditional love. When
the holiday gatherings fail to meet expectations, it’s common to feel sad, disappointed, and frustrated. Instead of striving for perfection, consider how you can be more realistic, accept what you perceive as any family dysfunctions, and simply enjoy time together.

3. Know What Presses Your Buttons
Perhaps it’s your mother commenting on your relationship or sibling pointing out the few extra pounds that you’ve gained that causes you to become irritated and defensive. Whether they intentionally try to or not, the people that know you the best are often experts at pressing your buttons. Unfortunately, there’s no magic solution to change their behavior, but you can create a game plan for dealing with what you consider as unpleasant comments. Know that you have control over how you react.

4. Ditch the Emphasis on Your Relationship Status
With commercials highlighting happy couples and you receiving invites to parties with the option to bring a
guest, it’s natural to feel upset if your love life isn’t exactly how you want it. Instead of focusing on what your love life is lacking, consider the advantages! For example, perhaps this is your opportunity to plan a New
Year’s getaway with your girlfriends.

5. Increase Your Awareness About How Food Affects Your Mood
Yes, the holiday cookies, pies, casseroles, homemade bread, stuffing, and cocktails are very tempting! However, indulging in sugar and fat laden foods can have an affect on your mood. Notice how certain foods affect your mood and ability to feel your best.
