Enhance your Eye Shape

They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Adding some beautiful curtains to those beautiful "windows" we have can boost confidence and can help others see our inner beauty shine through. At Barbizon of Akron, we know that inner beauty is much more important than the outer, but why not have both? Continue reading to get tips on how to apply eye liner for your specific eye shape!

Round Eyes: If your eyes are incredibly round, apply eyeliner to the top and bottom lashlines. Leave out the inner corners of your eyes. By leaving the corners open and dragging the liner through to the outside corners of the eyes, you are creating an illusion of elongated eyes. Think of Zooey Deschanel or Katy Perry.

Almond Eyes: With almond eyes, you can pull off just about any line. To create something more exotic, try a thick upper line with
the flared cat effect. Thick lashes also help accentuate the lashline. Beyonce and Angelina Jolie both rock almond eyes.

Small Eyes: If your eyes are small, try to go light on eyeliner. Neutral colors with some mascara would work best. Using darker colors will give the illusions of even smaller eyes, so try to avoid it. At times where you need to wear dark liner, keep it thin and as close to the lashline as possible. If you can, while wearing a dark liner, try to also line the upper and lower water lines with a white eyeliner which can additionally help to open the eyes up. Taylor Swift knows how to pull off having small eyes!

Big Eyes: To make eyes appear smaller, use a thick eyeliner. You can line the tops and bottoms from corner to corner and still look great. If eyes are large and round, experiment with a cat eye to add a little flare. Avoid white eye liner! Think of Mila Kunis and Anne Hathaway.

Wide-Set Eyes: If your eyes are wide-set, the illusion you will want to create is of the eyes being pulled in. Line the inside corners of yours eyes with a dark liner. Avoid white liner in that area as well as any light eye shadows. By highlighting the space between your eyes, you will make them appear even further apart. Jessica Alba and Brandy both have wide-set eyes.

Close-Set Eyes: For close-set eyes, you will basically be doing the opposite of wide-set. Line the outside corners of your eyes with a dark liner and highlight the inside corners with a white eyeliner, light
eyeshadow or both. By lining the outer corners, you are drawing the eyes towards to outside of your face and by highlighting the inner corners, you are creating the illusion of even more space between the eyes. Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Aniston have eyes that are close-set.

There are so many different ways to where eyeliner and we hope that you'll give these a try! Even if one of these looks doesn't apply to you, it's still fun to see how applying liner in different ways can cause your eyes to look one way or another! Makeup isn't all business, have some fun with it too. Shine on, Barbizon of Akron!

Spring and Summer Hair Tips!

It's that time again! The changing of the season. We'd like to say the change is happening outside, but so far, it seems to only be happening on our calendars. Rest assured, soon enough the birds will be chirping, the water will be warmer and we'll be back out soaking up the sun! But while you're out, be sure to take great care of your hair to prevent sun bleached and damaged post-summer hair come fall!

Proper Moisture: As the temperatures go up, we also see humidity start to climb which means that there is more moisture in the air. To keep hair from looking greasy or being over-hydrated (yes, there is such a thing), balance out your normal conditioning routine. If you are currently deep conditioning once a week, bump it to once every other week. Consider also dropping a heavy daily conditioner for a lighter one.

Accessorize: With spring we also tend to see a lot of wind! Use accessories to help keep hair pinned in place. Pony tails, braids, headbands and hair clips should be your accessories of choice. Try a nice taming spray to also lock your hair into place on the not-so-windy days.

UV Protection: While some people love natural highlights, the UV ray's ability to lighten hair can be a nightmare for those with colored hair or un-natural highlights! Pick up a shampoo that offers UV protection to keep hair color fresh.

Build-up Removal: Spring and summer are the prime times to be hitting the pool! If you're hopping into chlorine, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo as soon as you get out to remove any excess build-up in your hair. Some salons also offer treatment to remove build-up if simply shampooing is not enough.

Go Natural: Keep with your hair's natural texture. It's the most fresh look for spring time. Knotting and twisting hair can add a little umph if there just isn't enough going for you.

Yasmeen Answers "Why Barbizon of Akron?"

Barbizon of Akron, a training center for modeling, acting and, well, life has been around for over seventy years now. While we have been becoming a household name as the years go on, there are still people out there who may not understand the benefits of attending a program here at Barbizon of Akron, or may have some questions about what the program is actually like. Well, who better to explain the process and the benefits than one of our very own graduates? Read on below as Yasmeen Muhammad, now a very successful local commercial model, had to say.

I have always loved modeling and acting so I did some searching and found out about Barbizon of Akron. While attending, I really enjoyed my classes and I got to meet a lot of different people and was exposed to many great things. The acting exercises there also helped me break out of my shell, especially as I was performing them in from of people from such varied backgrounds.

Barbizon of Akron helped me in a lot of ways. Admittedly, I was a bit shy at times and the program helped me build my confidence and really showed me how to be comfortable in my own skin. Before the classes, I was not very comfortable. The classes also helped me branch out socially and I can feel that I am holding myself in a much higher regard and I feel much more positive about life in general.

While the program is based inside of a classroom, the curriculum transcended those walls. Some of the classes I enjoyed most were makeup and hair classes and I also really enjoyed being around my classmates. All of the training helps you develop in other areas of life because it helps you to become more professional. It teaches you how to go on job interviews, how to carry yourself, how to dress to make an impression, hair and makeup, as stated above, plus it really works as just an overall confidence building class!

Once graduating with Barbizon of Akron, anyone can come back at anytime and re-take the Barbizon program at no additional charge. They have women in their 30's that are in classes they took with the program as teenagers just to update their training or to take as just a pick-me-up. There are even some graduates who go on to work nationally and take classes when they come back to visit Ohio. Since graduating the program, I signed on with Pro-Model & Talent Mgmt.

My experience so far with Pro-Model & Talent Mgmt. has been great! I am both happy and grateful for all of the work opportunities that I have been given so far. Without the training that I received from Barbizon of Akron, I really feel like I wouldn't be getting the work that I am. The training they give teaches you what you need so you can get through a lot of jobs. They also helped me learn how to be prepared for every job, how to conduct myself in a professional manner and to always enjoy what I am doing.

Some people think that you don't need training for modeling or acting and that is something that I feel is not true. You need training in ANYTHING that you do to fall back on. Anyone that is considering Barbizon of Akron should give it a try; you never know where it could lead you in the long run!

Note from Yasmeen's Mother:

I enrolled Yasmeen into Barbizon of Akron because she wanted to model. I feel that it is important to support your children in what they want to do. I feel that children who have supportive parents actually do better in school and in life.

I can tell that the training Yasmeen has received at Barbizon of Akron has been very beneficial to her. It has made her so much more confident in herself. It helped her believe that she can accomplish anything that she sets her mind to and it will help her on job interviews, etc. in many different fields.

To other parents who may feel that their children shouldn't have to take classes for modeling and acting, I can tell you that it is important. It prepares young men and women on how to act, how to interact with other people and it teaches you many other things you have to know to be successful in the modeling and acting industries. I believe that the more experience you have, the better that you will do in that area.

To close, I would like to personally thank Barbizon of Akron and Pro-Model & Talent Mgmt. for this wonderful opportunity and experience for my daughter. Thank you!!!

We would like to thank Yasmeen and her mother for their time in helping us with this blog post! Both of these women have been nothing less than wonderful to work with and we can't wait to see how far Yasmeen will go in making her dreams a reality. We are all so proud of her!

Have the Best Prom Ever!

Prom is quickly approaching for many seniors, but even if your prom isn't for a few more years, keep these important tips in mind and you'll be sure to have a fun and safe prom experience! At Barbizon of Akron, we work to educate all of our students and want to see them succeed, not only in our classrooms, but in life! Read below and feel free to add any of your tips in the comments on our Facebook Page.

Trial Runs- To ensure you are looking great and feeling great on prom night, be sure to do a couple of trial runs! Try out any new makeup or hair care products weeks in advance to make sure they don't have an adverse reaction to your skin. Nothing is worse than breaking out in hives or getting all itchy on a night that you're supposed to be looking your best!

Watch your Health- Do no crash diet before the big date. Not only are you jeopardizing your overall health but it will leave you fatigued and listless for prom. You should be enjoying this event to the fullest, not worrying about whether you can stay awake or conscious for the next dance! Crash dieting even a few weeks out could compromise your immune system, leaving you open to get sick. No one wants to be running to the bathroom every few minutes, let alone have to miss their prom altogether! Stay conscious of your body's needs and aim for a healthy night out.

Skip the Tan- Tanning, whether indoors or outdoors, has major health risks. Obviously skin cancer tops this list but you also don't want to show up on prom day with irritated, dry and/or sunburned skin. Opt for a more natural look and a dress/ make-up that really compliments your skin tone. Also be cautious of getting a spray tan close to the date. There are very few things worse than looking like an Oompa Loompa for prom pictures!

Keep Someone Informed- Make sure that your parents, guardians or a trusted adult knows where you are at all times. This includes pre-prom activities (if you're going out to dinner, etc), your prom ETA, and your post-prom plans. Weird things can happen on prom night and it is always a good idea to let others know where you are in case trouble ensues.

Have an Escape Plan- Post-prom activities always hold the promise of being great fun! Depending on what you choose to do, there can be very risky outcomes. Have an escape plan ready in case you find yourself in a situation that you are not comfortable with. This can be as simple as making a pact to leave with your group of friends or having someone you can text or call to pick you up if needed. Of course, the safest plan of action is to make the smartest choices, but any situation can turn sour, so it is best to be prepared for anything!

Don't Drink and Drive- Just don't do it. We've all seen what can happen. Don't get in a car with anyone else who has been drinking either. Even if they try to convince you that they do it all of the time, that does not make it any safer! If alcohol is involved, simply take the car out of the equation. Be strong enough to not let others drink and drive or to allow friends to get in the car with someone else who has been drinking. A moment of weakness can lead to a lifetime of regret!

Have Fun- Above all else, have fun. We only get one true prom and it is something that everyone should get to experience. Have a great night of dinner and dancing and having fun with friends before graduation. Things change once school is over and this is your chance for a "final hurrah." But all things should end on a good note of fun and laughter, so remember to be responsible and to make this night a fun and safe one!

These are just a few tips from all of us at Barbizon of Akron that we know you will all take to heart! We know that each and every one of you will look glamorous and that you will represent yourselves (and us) well. So plan for a wonderful night, have fun, be safe, and above all else, remember these great times because they only happen once!
