9 Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water

Hi, Barbizon of Akron! Not too long ago we did a blog post about the benefits of drinking water. Not too long before that, we also did a blog on how lemons can improve your skin health. Well, now we're doing a blog on combining the two to make a knock-out combination that you should make part of your daily routine! The beauty and health benefits of lemon water are incredible! Aids in Weight Loss- After eight hours of sleep, drinking lemon water first thing in the morning helps to fight dehydration which can lower your metabolism. Drinking a full glass will also help curb your hunger cravings.

Balances pH in the Body- By drinking water everyday, lemon water helps reduce acidity as it is one of the most alkaline foods known to man! Although it has citric acid and seems really acidic, the acid doesn't metabolize in your system. A high alkaline diet has also been shown to help you lose weight quicker.

Anti-aging Effects- The vitamin C in lemons helps reduce blemishes and wrinkles!

5 Busted Myths about Skin

At Barbizon of Akron, we feel that it is crucial that all of our students have correct information when it comes to their health needs. This is why we've compiled a list of five popular and busted myths about skincare. Read up and let us know how many of these you heard on our Facebook page!

Myth: A product with SPF 30 provides twice as much protection as SPF 15

In reality, SPF 30 provides only about 4 percent more protection than SPF 15. To maximize your sun protection, apply sunscreen generously, reapply often (especially after being in the water) and avoid being in the sun during peak hours.

Myth: Age spots are inevitable as we get older

Age spots actually aren't due to age. Though it's more likely to have age spots at 40 than at 20, age spots are actually caused by years of exposure to UV light. Genetics also contribute to how susceptible a person is to age spots. True age spots are harmless. However, many women choose to lighten them for cosmetic reasons. Always use daily sun protection to help avoid age spots.

Myth: Greasy foods cause acne

Though greasy foods are probably not the healthiest choices, there's no evidence that they cause acne. In fact, dairy products and citrus products are more likely to cause acne breakouts than greasy foods or even chocolate.

Myth: Blackheads are due to dirty skin

Though they are dark in color, blackheads are not dirt and you can't just wash them away. Blackheads are caused when your skin produces too much sebum. Dead skin cells get in the path for the sebum to exit through the pore. This blocks the pore, creating a clog. When the clog nears the surface and oxides, it turns black. Don't try to scrub blackheads away with a regular facial scrub. Instead, find products that contain salicylic acid that exfoliates inside the pore to dissolve away the dead skin cells and oil.

Myth: All women eventually outgrow acne

Unfortunately, this is a circumstance where men have an advantage over women. Men typically outgrow acne because after puberty their hormone levels become steady. However, women have hormone fluctuations throughout their lives — due to menstrual cycles, pregnancy and so on. Women can suffer from acne well into their '20s, '30s, '40s and beyond.

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, do you notice that you’re feeling a little more stressed than usual? If so, you’re not alone since the holidays can be one of the most stressful times of year. Here’s 5 ways to stress less this holiday season!

1. Give Yourself Permission to Say No
Have you already received a handful of invites to holiday parties? As the invites continue to stream in, you may find yourself feeling torn between wanting to please your employer, family, and friends while maintaining a sense of balance during the holiday season. When you give yourself permission to gracefully say no to an invitation, you are actually saying yes to taking care of yourself. If you’re concerned that the person who invited you will be offended if you don’t attend, consider talking about it with someone you can trust before declining the invitation.

2. Release Your Expectation of Perfection
When families gather for the holidays, there’s often an expectation that everything will run smoothly and essentially be “perfect” with delicious food, meaningful conversation, laughter, and unconditional love. When

Avocado- We love avocados, and love guacamole even more. The best part, they are full of Vitamin C & E and is perfect for elasticity of your skin which helps to slow down the aging process. It is also loaded with mono-saturated fat and Omega-3 fatty acid.

Green Tea- Green tea is dubbed much better for the skin than water. It is a natural remedy for acne and is very rich in antioxidants. If you are looking for a healthier alternative to coffee, then green tea is an excellent choice.

Oily Fish- Mackerel, salmon, sardines and fresh tuna are the fish you are looking for. These are healthy because they have a lot of omega-3 oils which are good for the skin. Omega-3 helps in the skin's elasticity and unclogs the pores.

5 Tips to Radiant Skin

We at Barbizon of Akron love They came up with some fabulous ways to get your skin to look amazing! The best part is they are really simple changes that do not seem to take too much time. Here are some great tips that you can start using asap!

Exfoliate- Sure, you've heard that exfoliating your skin is important, but to achieve glowing skin, it is a must. Try exfoliators that contain alphy hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid. At-home peels are another effective path to smoother, more even-toned skin and generally contain up to 30 percent glycolic acid, whereas a dermatologist can use up to 70 percent concentrations for more dramatic results.

Detox your body- It is true: the outside of your body reflects what’s going on on the inside. Skin conditions develop when the skin can’t do its job of eliminating toxins efficiently, which happens because the other eliminative organs are overloaded as well. Talk to a natural health care professional to find a detox program that works for you, or take a load off your system – and benefit your skin by doing the following:
  • Drink warm lemon water each day to help flush toxins from the body
  • Up your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables to boost the amount of skin-saving nutrients you’re getting.
  • Limit salty snacks which can cause swelling and water retention.

Eat and apply antioxidants- Antioxidants help fight free radicals and protect the skin from environmental damage. Five Makeup Essentials for your Makeup Bag

There is so much makeup out there, and for some of us, so much we wear day in and day out. So, how do you find out what pieces are essentially to take with you throughout the day? Have no fear, our list of essentials is here!

Tinted Sunscreen- Tinted sunscreen, or a BB cream, is a definite must have! It should be applied throughout the day to keep the UV rays at bay, even in the winter time. Because it's a moisturizer, it will also help to keep skin conditioned and provide a light foundation to keep skin looking fresh!

Tinted Lip Gloss- This should go without saying. Throughout the day, lip gloss needs applied over and over again as it wears off from eating, drinking, and sometimes just talking a lot. Get a nourishing lip gloss to keep lips healthy during the winter months as it will help you avoid chapping.

Concealer- Ever have a pimple pop up in the middle of the day? It's happened to us all! Don't get caught! Keep concealer on your for those pimple emergencies and no one will notice that you even have them.

Face Powder- Did you have to run to class this morning? Or maybe you're just a little stressed for an upcoming test? Stress can cause your body to create more oils and exerting yourself can cause sweat! No one wants oily or overly shiny skin! Keep powdered and no one will see the stress on your face.

Mascara- Whether it be sweat or tears, mascara loves to melt down cheeks! But it doesn't mean you have
to have a meltdown! Keep mascara on you to keep lashes looking lush and to make those eyes pop!

Our Photographer Wins Huge Award!

Hey, Barbizon of Akron! You already know that we love celebrating our students, but we also love to celebrate those that we work with. Jim Metrisin has worked with Barbizon of Akron for years shooting their Barbizon of Akron photo shoots!

Jim was awarded, October 19th, with a great award from his city council and church parish! It was for his dedication as a Eucharistic minister, parish photographer and minister to those who are incarcerated. They applauded his dedication and service to the community and the way that Jim goes above and beyond in his service to St. Ignatius of Antioch Parish. This award is a BIG deal!

Also given an award was Sr. Pat Burke CSJ. Jim has been humbled by this experience and said that it was a great honor. We also would like to thank him for his service and hope that you will join us in celebrating this huge honor!

Jim will be the first one to tell you that he is no different from you or I. The secret to making your dreams come true is to begin following them! Also, when you give to your community, you also give back to yourself. Always be true to yourself, your dreams, and those around you, and life will bring you greatness!

Get Clear Skin!

It's time for another weather change! Which, in Ohio, means changes in our skin too. Avoid breakouts this fall/ winter transition by following these tips from Seventeen Magazine below.

  1. Prevent big breakouts- Say goodbye to oil buildup by swiping a clarifying pad over your face three times a week. Pick one with L-carnitine, which prevents the production of oil in your pores, and witch hazel, which is a natural degreaser. 
  2. Gently zap zits. Don't let pimples leave their mark. Treat blemishes with a vitamin A spot treatment to speed up skin cell renewal. You won't scar and your zit will stay gone!
  3. Get rid of blackheads. De-gunk pores and they'll be less noticeable. Apply a sulfuric clay mask once a week to absorb excess oil. The clay has amazing powers that suck out dirt and leave your T-zone less shiny!

Bonus! Cover Zits Like a Pro!

  1. Dab on concealer. Cover a pimple with a light touch so you don't draw more attention to it. Use a makeup brush to tap on concealer until the bump is covered. Then soften the edges by blending with a clean finger.
  2. Even out your whole face. Next, apply a lightweight foundation to the rest of your face. Pick one with color correcting properties. Apply with a clean makeup sponge so the cream blends in with your skin tone.
  3. Set with powder. Make sure your pimple-free look lasts all day! With a finger, tap powder over the zit. The cornstarch in the powder prevents the oils in your skin from melting the makeup underneath!

Avoid Acne and Wrinkles... With Oil!

At Barbizon of Akron, we believe in giving our students tips they need to succeed. Sometimes these are based on confidence, sometimes health, and other times fashion and beauty. Today, we're tying health and beauty together as we all learn about how to use an oil cleanser.

Growing up, many of you probably heard about this oil free cleanser or that. But, did you know that stripping your skin of oils could actually be harmful? By stripping the oils in your skin, your body actually begins to create more oil to try to balance out your skin, so it actually makes skin oilier. Sometimes it will just dry your face out completely causing dry skin and black heads. And for those with the all-too-common combination skin, you'll find yourself with pimples where your skin is too oily and blackheads where it's too dry.

So, what do you do? You begin using an oil cleanser! By cleansing your face with oil, you hydrate the skin and naturally balance it out as the oil combats oil. Counter-intuitive, right? But it works!

Now to get down to business. Buy yourself some Jojoba oil, which can be found at natural food stores, and then follow the steps below! Because this isn't a traditional cleanser, it does have different steps, so pay close attention.

  1.  Wash your hands with soap and water without wetting your face. Clean hands= clean face when cleansing with oil.
  2.  Pour a nickel to quarter-sized amount of oil onto your hand and begin massaging it into your face, concentrating on areas with clogged pores or dry patches. For daily cleansing, massage for one minute. Massage for up to 10 minutes if you’re feeling extra luxurious. You may feel little gritty pieces under your fingers – believe it or not, those are bits of dry skin or hardened sebum.
  3. Dampen a washcloth with very warm water and lay it on your face. This will further open your pores and allow the oils to cleanse and balance your skin. After one to two minutes, use the towel to wipe off the oil gently. Rinse the towel and wipe one more time. (You may also hold your head over a bowl of steaming hot water if you have time. Follow up with a damp washcloth.)
  4.  Moisturize as usual.
While this should work for most skin, it is important to remember that no one's chemical makeup is the same as another's. Acne can also be caused from stress, diet and hormones, in which case the oil may not be a cure-all but it will still cleanse the face. But, if you've tried everything out there and still have not seen results, an oil cleanser may be just what you're looking for, so try it out!

Top Fashion Trends for Fall 2013

As always, one of Barbizon of Akron's goals is to keep our students fashionable and stylish! So we hit the cyber runway to gather the best looks for this fall season. Try them one by one or all together to make a real statement!

Over the Knee Boots- More wearable than strappy shoes, over the knee boots pack a punch of toughness! Think of them as leather leggings or a great staple for when you don't feel like shaving your legs! You can wear them with jeans, your favorite pants, skirts or dresses. Pair them with a loudly patterned dress to make them your own.

Shades of Green- Green is the official color for Fall 2013! And there are so many different shades, you can find one of any hair color, skin tone and taste. Keep the green subtle, or really pack a punch! It's completely up to your style.

Turtlenecks- A plain turtleneck is infinitely wearable. Wear them with a cute cardigan or as the bottom layer to a great layered look. It's perfect for cooler weather because it keeps you toasty without the bulk! Audrey Hepburn is a huge fan!

Slouchy Pants- Their roomy and back with a vengeance! Looser and more subdued, these pants can be paired with just about any look. Wear the high-waisted with your favorite pair of heels and you'll have a style all your own.

Statement Outerwear- You want the rest of your clothes to make a statement, so why not your coat too? With outerwear coming in every size, color, style, volume and shape imaginable, there is absolutely no reason why you can't find a coat to suit your personality! Feel free to splurge as great outwear is guaranteed to take your look to the next level!

An Inside Look Into the World of Barbizon of Akron

Hey Barbizon of Akron fans, ready for a riddle? Who speaks their own language, has their own way of dressing and has distinct needs and desires? Who follows the newest trends and grows up right before our eyes? Do you give up? The answer is, TEENAGERS.

We’ve all been at that age of confusion, and we’ve all experienced the lack of confidence. We all understand that this is a difficult era to grow up in which is why, at Barbizon of Akron, we want our students to know that we care about each and every one of their well-beings!

Being a teenager can be stressful. Teens are bombarded with challenges they continue to face on a daily basis including, poor self-image, peer pressure, heavy school work loads, problems at home, feeling like they don’t fit in, pressured into making life-altering decisions, bullying- and the list goes on... At Barbizon of Akron, we understand these hardships and want to help. These negative feelings that teens experience can lead to negative outcomes such as low self-esteem, which can lead to even more serious problems such as, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and even, teen suicide.

That is why Barbizon of Akron works with parents to train and educate young people to gain a stronger
sense of identity, self-confidence, increased emotional stability and the ability to make the right decisions.

Barbizon has been helping teenagers mature into young adults since 1939. We believe that feeling confident in one’s self means walking into a room full of people. Confidence means speaking with authority and not being afraid to express a well-educated opinion. It also means walking with pride, and dressing with style. At Barbizon of Akron we are committed and fully concerned with the individuals in our program because we care. Our goal is to help each student blossom into a mature, confident young adult. Keeping our Barbizon class size small is a strong factor that aids in the successful education of each of our students. We are able to give personal attention to each student on an individual level. This also helps our students make strong connections with other students in their class.

Barbizon equips young men and women with the tools to help them sail through life. Our graduates find themselves with careers from modeling to medicine, engineering to

The education our students receive gives them the competitive edge needed to succeed in today’s society. Our cutting edge curriculum teaches what you would traditionally expect from a training and placement facility: poise, posture, photomovement, skin care, hair care, makeup, nail care and acting for film and television. What sets us apart is that we also focus on important life skills such as, effective communication, speech, body language, etiquette, health and nutrition, self- esteem and other essentials for success in life.

Barbizon of Akron delivers a well-rounded education that teens and adults alike will be able to apply to every day for the rest of their life. Students who miss a session are able to reschedule their class at no additional charge. They can also refresh any session of their choice at no additional cost either! This is a great feature that Barbizon offers to keep students marketable in the industry job field.

Upon successful completion of the program and graduation of the program, our students are invited to sign with our agency, Pro-Model and Talent Mgmt. The agency is a major working model/talent agency in the tri-state area, with models/talent working locally, national and internationally!

Barbizon of Akron wants to take the time to educate you with tips that everyone should know when looking to get into the field of modeling and acting.

Watch for and be wary of agencies that promise or guarantee work. Clients are always looking for different looks, so promising that a model will be given work is not something that should be happening. No one can guarantee work. It’s important to be on the lookout for agencies that want you to buy a portfolio/pressbook. These features are developed with the work you do as a model or talent, they cannot be purchased! As a male or female looking to become involved with the industry, it’s important to request to see the clients an agency works with. We love sharing this information with people interested in Barbizon of Akron! We are proud of the clientele that we have established over the years.

You should always be aware of how long an agency has been established! Small, unknown agencies with no established history will often be limited as to what they will be able to do. A tip that we love to share with people interested in our program that I referenced previously, is that we are a licensed training center by the State of Ohio. If a training center is not licensed, they do not meet state regulations and should NOT be teaching- it is against the law! 6 Ways to Improve Skin with Lemons!

Hi, Barbizon of Akron! Did you know that the lemon is an amazing fruit. It is good for you on the inside and out. I had no idea that lemons could do so many great things to make my skin look and feel better. Check out these six ways lemon is truly a miracle fruit!

Fade age spots- Just apply straight lemon to the areas before bed and wash off in the morning with cool water. After a week or two, the lemon will have cleansed the skin and lighten the color. If you want an all over body treatment, just add 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice to your bath and soak for 20 minutes.

For brighter, softer skin- use fresh lemon juice on any area of your body, including the knees, elbows, and face to brighten up and soften your skin.

Get Rid of Blackheads- If you rub lemon juice on the area with your blackheads, it should make them disappear. Do this every night and rinse with cool water in the morning until blackheads are gone.

Make a moisturizing mask- for dry skin by mixing equal amounts of honey, lemon and olive oil. Apply the
mixture to dry areas on the skin and allow it to dry thoroughly for about 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

To exfoliate dead skin cells- rub a cut lemon dipped into a half-teaspoon of sugar over your face for a few minutes, or create a mild mixture by using lemon juice, sugar and a small amount of water. Do this once a week to help remove dead skin cells and refresh your skin.

To make a lemon anti-wrinkle mask- mix a teaspoon of honey, a few drops of lemon juice and a drop of sweet almond oil. Apply this mixture on the face and allow it to dry for 20 minutes and wash off.

If your skin is sensitive to the citric acid in lemons, you can dilute the juice with some water. Using a cotton ball to apply is the best way. Try not to use lemon juice on your skin before any sun exposure since it will make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

In honor of National Hair Loss Awareness Month, here are five things you need to know to avoid getting bald spots before your time.

1. Rethink your diet: The idiom "you are what you eat" applies to your hair health, too. "Hair and scalp
problems can arise from either a deficiency or an excess of nutrients in your diet," says trichologist Elizabeth Cunnane Phillips of the Philip Kingsley Clinic in New York City. "Your hair cells need a balanced diet of proteins, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to function at their best." Avoid extreme weight loss as well—another common determinant of hair loss.

2. Chill out: Elevated stress levels may cause an increase in shedding, so it's important to take time to relax your mind. And while exercising is a great way to reduce tension, be aware: Too much working out can provoke hair loss.

3. Don't forget about your scalp: "Infrequent washing encourages dandruff, and studies have shown that dandruff can cause or exacerbate hair loss," Phillips explains. "If you already have dandruff or a flaky/itchy scalp, use special[ized] shampoos and toners to help clear irritation and flakes."

4. Take your vitamins: Get your fill of the necessary scalp and hair vitamins by taking supplements. Add calcium, iron, zinc, gelatin protein, soy protein, and vitamins D, B12, and B6 to your daily diet. It seems like a laundry list, but if you're patient, you'll notice the difference.

5. See a specialist: If you know hair loss runs in the family, it's worth it to see a specialist. A trichologist, like Phillips, deals specifically with the hair and scalp. A simple blood test can determine the cause of your hair loss and suss out the solution.

Back to School Makeup Must Haves!

Its that back to school season, and while some of you have already started, we know that these must haves will help get you through the rest of the year! So, have no fear, makeup help is here! Check out our great list below!

Lip Crayons- Lip crayons are an awesome way to add subtle color to your lips! Not only that, they work to moisturize you pout and last longer than most lipsticks and lip glosses. And, there are so many colors out there, it's hard to get bored! Try them out today.

Miss Ohio Latina is from Barbizon of Akron!

Here at Barbizon of Akron each and every one of our students and graduates is exceptional in their own way. This is the case with our very own Stephanie Miranda! At only 19 years old, this young woman already has an amazing future ahead of her. Her story is one of fun and success so we decided to share it with all of you!

A Barbizon of Akron alum, Stephanie has had a lot of success in pageants. Most recently, she represented the city of Youngstown in the Miss Ohio Latina pageant. In a night filled with tears, hugs and lots of excitement, Stephanie was crowned Miss Ohio Latina 2013! She had a great time making her family proud and loved seeing that pride reflected in their smiles when her name was called to be crowned. One of the most exciting things for Stephanie when it comes to pageants is making a lot of new friends on their amazing journey. Most she even considers her sisters!

Stephanie will be representing Ohio at the national Miss Latina Pageant being held in Cancun, Mexico later this year. She is beyond excited and can't wait to make all of us proud! We can't wait to see how she does!

More recently, Stephanie attended the IMTA convention with Pro-Model & Talent Mgmt. They knew that she had star power, but they wanted to put it to the test! She was so excited that she packed up her things a whole week before we were even leaving for the convention. The very first day of taking advantage of her trip to New York with them, Stephanie had her first private meeting. Stephanie received an offer that she is now considering from an agency out in LA!

Below is what Stephanie had to say about Barbizon of Akron:

I have always liked modeling and acting but I never knew how to get started! My mom told me when she was younger she went to a modeling school called Barbizon. So we looked it up and we found Barbizon of Akron Ohio. We called in and went to the open call. Right then and there they told me I was accepted! On August 3, 2010, I became a Barbizon graduate. Brabizon really helped me in my self-confidence to keep modeling and even doing pageants. I'm so thankful that I had the best teacher. I'm sure I wouldn't be where I am right now if it wasn't for the training Barbizon gave me. So, thank you, Barbizon!

And thank you Stephanie for your kind words! We knew she had what it takes to be great and were happy to help polish her into who she has become today. At Barbizon of Akron, we celebrate giving people the skills they need to accomplish ANYTHING in life!
